The moth Lhommeia subapicata

Spread the love

I recently got myself a Canon RF 100mm macro lens and an adapter to fit my old ring flash, and it works quite well. There are a lot of Lepidoptera (moths, butterflies) around at the moment. You may have seen the owl moth and the owl, if not scroll back on my profile. I decided to try to capture some of these insects.

This is Lhommeia subapicata, apparently known as Banded Thorn. Lhommeia is a genus of moths in the family Geometridae, the second largest of the Order Lepidoptera with an estimated 23,002 species referable to 2,002 genera worldwide. The Geometridae are distinguished by the planiform (flattened) resting position oftheir wings as well as their delicate and slender bodies.

Interestingly, I was not able to find a single research paper on Lhommeia subapicata or the genus Lhommeia in particular. Science still has lots to learn! This one was on the ground among the dead leaves in the riverine forest next to our house.
